Game Review 1 (written by Amigaretrogamer) Added on: 04/16/2009
Review of Barbarian. I received Barbarian free with my Amiga 500 many, many years ago. There were 10 games in total and to be honest Barbarian was not my favorite. However I did spend hours trying to complete it.
The sound was interesting, if somewhat annoying, especially when you have just lost your head, literally. The most satisfying move being to cut the opponent’s head clean off. Initially facing the opposite direction, then twirling your sword above your head and turning at the same time to face your opponent.
If both are in the correct position, your opponents head will slice clean off and bounce across the particular arena you happen to be in. However a lack of choice of moves made the game very repetitive and restrictive.
The characters were quite good though. There is the option to fight an "attractive" lady and also a troll that dragged the defeated body from the plying screen. If the head had been removed, the troll kicked it across the screen, which was quite amusing the first time, unless it was your head obviously, then it was

just irritating - a bit like the music!
Overall, Barbarian is rather fun game for a short period of time.

Game Review 2 (written by Alisbc) Added on: 04/16/2009
Barbarian on the C64 was one of the finest beat- em up games available when I was young.
The gameplay was the greatest aspect of the game and provided me with hundreds of hours of entertainment. Single player mode was challenging enough as you battled ever increasingly difficult opponents until you could rescue your fair maiden, but the game really came to life in the superior, amazingly addictive two player mode. The basic premise of the game is using a various combination of moves: you must Kick, chop head-butt or decapitate your opponent against the clock with the winner standing victorious over his slain adversary, broadsword in hand. One of the best features in the game is the spinning head-chop which could finish your opponent off in one hit, with the bonus of kicking your enemies head off the screen like a football or picking him up by the unfashionable haircut at the end of the bout.
Graphically this wasn’t the most amazing game, but for the C64’s 8bit processor it stood its ground. I remember the sound being a little on the tedious side after awhile, but I challenge anyone to find me an enjoyable commodore 64 soundtrack.
Many hours in a dark room playing Barbarian! I give Barbarian a brilliant 95%.

Great game, and easy to get the hang of. I loved all the different levels that are on offer. It gets hard towards the end.

I first played this game as a spry 10 yr old on an old computer system called an Amstrad. it was the best game i had ever played! I guess you could call it an old school mortal Kombat game, two players trying to kill each other, each player is a 'barbarian' and has a mighty sword. The controls and moves are fairly basic hit the opponent so many times with the sword and you win. What made this game truly great was you could win the game at anytime with a well timed spinning cut to the oppositions head. do this and you proceded to chop his head off. It added that extra element of even if you were down and nearly out you could go for that hail mary and win. Each opponent gets harder and harder and it is all in all quite an impressive game.decent old school graphics, great sound and gameplay.

A great game for its time. It was extremely fast paced and required skill and memory. I don't believe I ever finished it though. Colors could have been better.
