Darklight Conflict is a fantastic space shooter released by EA in 1997. It didn't sell well or get much attention, despite glowing reviews by PC game magazines. It didn't sell well or get much attention. Being not a common game it is very hard to come by except I finally found it here.
The story runs in modern times based around one main character, a human fighter pilot abducted by aliens called the Reptons to fight their war in the future with another race, the Ovons.
Not the best storyline, but there's plenty of blowing things up, and that's the real fun here.
The game's controls are very simple. This is more of an action shooter. Pitch and yaw are controlled by arrow keys, holding control changes them to roll and afterburner. Throttle is handled by control and up / down arrows or the number keys. Spacebar fires one of up to three primary weapons and alt fires you’re the almost useless secondary weapon. Don't let yourself get caught with only the secondary weapon because your pretty much dead by that stage.
As for the weapons, there aren’t a lot of them, but they cover a wide variety of things that make things go boom. There's all the usual weapons:
Fast firing lasers, slower but more powerful plasma cannon, very strong but very hard to use frag grenades (if your a sure shot then they are great to knock out 5 or 6 enemies but be careful you don’t blow up a control ship that your supposed to be defending.
The graphics and sound are excellent quality compared to other games released around the same period. The ships are produced in full 3d and textured rendering. Darklight Conflict uses particle effects rather than the 2D pre rendered explosions that were most widely used in other games of 1997. They look much more like a real explosion rather than bits and pieces flying over the screen, but they also weren't quite spectacular enough. Large ships don’t blow up in a spectacle of light and amazement but more a little fizzle of a soda bottle being opened.
If you like action shooters, this game is for you.
