Contra’s popularity came from that you can play two players at the same time which at the time was uncommon feature in video games at that time. Graphics are nice and clean and music has that arcade feel. The story line goes something like this, that in the future a meteor strike hit a fictional island off the cost of New Zealand.
In this meteor came a dormant alien life form. In the year 2633 a terrorist organization known as the Red Falcon had commenced activity to take control of the work. You and your comrade have traveled to the island to stop this threat.
In the early North American home versions, Bill was renamed as Mad Dog and Lance as Scorpion. The sci-fi setting was moved back in time to 1988 in the instruction manuals, and the setting was changed to South America, even though the futuristic presentation of the game stayed exactly the same.
You or a friend go thought the forest you have to shoot up many enemies with your machine gun. When you kill the enemy you can pick up very gritty weapons. Like the machine gun that sprays bullets in a fan shape. The Lazier gun, some big ball which must hurt, and many more. You character can doge enemy fire with his supper jump in the air and huddle in a ball. (Ok. Just take it as if he can do acrobatics to miss enemy fire).
The controls are great to use. You can fire in any direction you like which makes the game much more fun than just up, down, left and right. As for play ability I think that this game is better compared to Metal Slug. Although Metal Slug has better graphics but if you play this game you can see what a good game means.
There are tanks snipers in the trees and big boss tanks at the end of each level. That is not all because if you get hooked to the game which I did and I know you will there is much more divers enemy’s as you progress in this game.
All up this is a great arcade game that should not be missed. This game is full of action, guns and great fun.
