Dark Castle was the first computer game I ever played. It was, of course, back in the dark ages, played in the original black and white on a 256 colour Mac. The game is in 2D, and you have to pass through various parts of the castle to get to the final section by throwing rocks at various enemies or dodging boulders and lightning bolts. The challenge when I played it was that you could not save it, and once you lost, you had to start over completely, which was a pain, but made it harder.

There are many extra things you can do in the game as well. For instance, you can get a shield to block enemy attacks in one section of the castle, or fireballs
in another section. Both are very difficult to obtain, but worth it.
All too often, people will not play old games because the graphics are not the latest 3D technology. What people do not realize is that the stories and gameplay are just as good, if not better in some cases. Dark Castle is a prime example of one such game. While its graphics cannot hope to compare with something like half-life 2, it is still as fun and difficult. Games like this and Prince of Persia are thrown to the side all the time, when they should be still on the shelves.
This game came out in a colour version when that technology was available, and introduced the game to a new audience as well as providing a surprising enjoyment to those who had played it in the black and white. Colour added a new dimension to the game. It was like playing Dirge of Cerberus and running through the Shinra mansion for the first time in first person, after having played Final Fantasy VII.
There are also three levels of difficulty that you progress through, so you essentially beat the game three times (much like Diablo II). This is actually quite hard to do, especially without saving. In fact, this was so difficult that there used to be a legend that when you beat the game on hard without being able to save, there was a secret full-screen, colour movie at the end. While this, of course, was not true, it illustrates the difficulty of the original game. All in all, this is an excellent game and should be played by anyone who enjoys computer gaming, whether Tetris or Halo.
