Game Review (written by Mcd_maddy) Added on: 05/09/2007
The game Descent was a game that I greatly enjoyed back when I was a young lad, playing it was an absolute delight. How can one not enjoy the classic game? At first I had been given a demo version in which the first three weapons and the first three missiles were the only choices to use and the first five levels were the only ones available, but that was enough to compel me to purchase a copy. My first game that I had ever purchased.
The graphics at the time were unbelievable and the storyline to it rather compelling. The sound was also rather enjoyable, the sounds fitting well with the game. It was also rather uncommon at the time to have a game that had such quality in sound either.
Nothing more enjoyable than destroying the enemies you would come across. There was also the fact that many of these enemies were strategically placed so it was highly enjoyable the fact that there was a large element of surprise. There were lots of controls, but once you mastered them you mastered the game.
Game play was enjoyable and the enemies were clever. One could never predict where the next shot was going to be fired from and some

of the last minute plays were nerve wracking but enjoyable all the same. You would not be able to finish one level without at least once getting killed. This is not down to lack of experience, but rather an assumption based on such!
The intelligence of the enemy was at the time unbelievable and still today prove a challenge. The enemies were relentless in groups and would make it almost impossible to barge in guns blazing. They would vary from weapon strength to sheer numbers. The weapons that one could wield were fun and all had advantages in the game. The laser could be upgraded four times to make the quad cannon. It did damage but other weapons were better. The Vulcan Cannon was effective against single enemies as it would push them back. The spread fire cannon was the opposite of the Vulcan Cannon and made life much easier when facing multiple enemies. The plasma cannon was good when facing a horde of enemies because it fired rather quickly. And the fusion cannon basically was the king gun. It charges up and BLAM! Nothing left afterwards. The missiles were a strategic blessing. The concussion missile was the basic missile, it was straightforward but basically was weak. The homing missile was a little better, at least having the advantage of a curve towards enemies. The Smart Missile was useful and effective. But the best weapon in the game was the Mega Missile. It was the most powerful explosion in the game and allowed for a domination of whoever you would face. The proxy mine was useless as enemies would not follow you.
All in all it was a fantastic game and is highly recommended for download.

This is one of the best games that I have ever played, and ages particularly well. It is in unique in the fact that it is set up in a confined environment but handles like a space sim. There a r multiple power up items you can acquire to upgrade your ship as well as numerous challenging foes (controled by an impressive AI for it's time) All in all a very addictive game that will provide hours of entertainment and challenge!

it is an awesome game. I really like the 3D engine. it may not shape up to Doom, but Descent is a winner on originality. highly recommended!
