Descent 2

PC
Genre:  Arcade    |     Year: 1996    |     Publisher: Interplay     |     Developer: Parallax Software Corp.
Game Review 1 (written by Eric) Added on: 03/08/2008
Descent 2 picks up from where the first Descent game leaves off with some really great improvements. The game was created by Parallax Software Corporation and is a shooter game that involves aliens and robots. Parallax also created the first Descent game.
In this game you will play a mercenary who has to investigate aliens in the Zeta Aquilae system. After you finish the job you will be able to collect the payment and go back home. The payment you are collecting is the money that the mercenary actually earned from finishing the first job in the first Descent game.

The payment you are collecting is the money that the mercenary actually earned from finishing the first job in the first Descent game. In the first project that has been assigned to the mercenary, he was supposed to eliminate the aliens that have been infiltrating the Solar System. The thing

is, after having completed the first assignment, instead of being paid and being sent home, you find out that you are still contractually obliged to the company. They hold of your payment and send you to the new assignment in Zeta Aquilae. Only after you finish this new assignment will you be sent home with your money.
You will then have to face aliens and other obstacles in this place. There will be a guide robot that will help you in your journey but even with the guide robot the game can be very challenging. You need to locate the guide bot and in the latter parts of the game the guide bots are not that easy to locate so that adds to the challenge of the game itself. You can use the guide bots to locate exits, power ups and other useful things in the game. You just tell the guidebot what you are looking for and follow it through the game.
The graphics in the second game has been greatly improved from the first game. It is done in 3-D graphics with stunning details and design. The graphics is one of the best features of the game. The sounds also add more fun to the game. The plotline is pretty interesting and the game is not boring at all. It is fast-paced, well-made and will keep a gamer interested for a pretty long time.
Another great aspect of the game is how you can play it over a network with multiple players. This definitely adds to the value of the game. Overall I would say this game is worth downloading especially for those who enjoy the shooter genre.

Game Review 2 (written by Shannon) Added on: 03/01/2008
Robots, aliens, intergalactic mines and mercenaries all combine to create the interesting tale of Descent 2. This is the second installment of the series, and picks up perfectly where the original game left off. It is one of Interplay’s many science fiction shooters, and was released in the nineties after development by the Parallax Software Corporation, who also created the original Descent. This second installment runs from a very similar but updated engine, although it does feature some intriguing improvements that are noticeable from the beginning.
In the original Descent, the user played the part of mercenary soldier who was hired by a clever company to eradicate the alien infestation in the mines of the Solar System. The player completes this challenge, and returns to the surface looking for two things: his payment, and a little vacation from all of the action. He gets neither. He is, because of one of those crafty fine print contractual clauses, still under the employ of the mother company for three days after completing a mission, and must continue to perform as they see fit, or forfeit his payment. Well, what is three more days after what he has been through, right? Wrong. The mercenary is sent to the Zeta Aquilae system to investigate a new threat of aliens in that system. After this “simple” reconnaissance mission, he will be allowed to jump back home to the PTMC Rim Station in the Asteroid Belt and finally collect his payment.
Now, we all know it could not be that easy or there would be no game! The user is once again going to find himself in a subterranean environment filled with enemies and traps. There are some very noticeable differences, however. First of all, the graphics have been greatly improved, and the rendering of these space worlds is much more lively and engaging. Secondly, a probably the most innovative new feature, is the guide bot. The guide bot is a little helper droid that the user will have to locate in each cavern. In the easier levels, he will be located near the entrance and can help the gamer to complete the rest of his quest. In the later levels, finding the guide bot is practically a quest in itself. The guide bot is a very useful little tool. Once he is located, the user will be able to ask the guide bot to find different things and can follow him through the mazes without getting lost. The bot will find exits, reactors, powerups, and just about anything else the user would like to find. He is also a smart little fellow, and will wait for the player to catch up if he gets behind.
Overall, this is a nice little shooter, and the addition of the guide bot, along with the improved graphics, makes it a step above its predecessor. The story is sound and builds nicely upon the original Descent, making this follow up a true play.
