This game harkens back to the days before the genre of console was even really know, sure we had Atari and Oddessy 2000 but the arcades had all the COOL games. This was a game I remember spending many hours playing in our local airport either waiting for my dad’s plane to land or take off. It is simple, and that is one of the attractions of this game for me now. As my kids get older I will try, and probably fail but get them to appreciate games like Dig Dug and Donkey Kong and so many others that were just SIMPLE.

As the game progresses you will begin to develop the blisters of
old as you mash the pump button and try to catch all the little pookas and fire-breathers before they get you or escape (hate when they do that). A few tricks for old timers returning to play this again after MANY years. Remember that you can pump up the little buggers a little bit and that will allow you to catch another one or get away because they are going to over-run you. The speed picks up and the little monsters will come rushing at you in ghost form. Try to lure them under rocks that have a long straight UP path and then drop the “bomb” on them and watch your points soar. But remember the last one will run if you kill off all his friends.
This game is NOT for those looking for a quick lightning reacting controlled character or for something that looks sharp and crisp, the graphics are average (for the time period and HORRIBLE by today’s standards), but who cares. Dig Dug himself doesn’t move all that fast and it’s quite a chore to pump up and pop all the little monsters. This does make the game challenging, but who wants to play a game that you can simply walk through from start to finish and maybe get a little dose of adrenalin every once in awhile. I would rather ride my adrenalin and have to let out a sigh of relief that I completed the next level or pause the game because I need a moment to let my nerves calm down. That is what I want from a game.
All in all I would give Dig Dug a descent rating, maybe simply because I have childhood memories tied to it but I do find it fun and if the graphics don't have to super powerful, guess what it will play just great on ANY machine you might find.
