Digger was created in 1983 by Windmill Software for the era of the IBM PC with CGA graphics. It was one of the first games with full color and is very similar to the arcade game Mr. Do. Although it was brought back to life in 1998 to run on computers using the new at the time Pentium technology, the first version for IBM is the one I remember the most. In this game, you have to dig tunnels to collect treasures and kill enemies before moving up to the next level.
It is nice enough to start you out with at least one tunnel, but the rest you have to dig on your own, either vertically or horizontally. The treasures you get to
collect are emeralds and bags of gold. The emeralds usually are in clusters, but that does not mean they are easy to collect. There are monsters in this game and are “nobbins” and will quickly change into “hobbins” and they generally appear on the top right hand corner of the screen. The higher the level, the faster they change form. If you dig a tunnel under a bag of gold you will notice that the ground will shake a little and the bag will flash right before falling. When the bag of gold falls, it will squish whatever is under it, whether it is you or a monster. When the bag of gold drops it will pop open and that makes it easier to collect the loose gold coins. The bags can be moved around until you are able to get them open.
Although you are equipped with a weapon, it only shoots in a straight line, which at the time was okay. When you do use your weapon, it takes a few seconds to recharge itself, so just make sure you have some kind of plan in place when you do have to use it. If you have successfully defeated all the monsters that get created for each level, a cherry will appear and that opens a bonus round. The games graphics were good and the music was pretty cool. I highly recommend downloading this wonderful and addictive game!
