DynaBlaster is a very simple but very fun game that was released in the early nineties by Hudson Soft. It is a standard arcade game featuring a birds-eye view of the action, which revolves around the play of Japanese-style bomber man. In this game, the hero must rescue his beloved girlfriend, who has been captured by an evil dragon. You, the hero, must reach the dragon’s castle in order to save her. Each level you complete brings you closer to your love and to heroic status.
The game play itself is very simple. The game generates levels filled with blocks and creatures. The hero needs to carefully place bombs so that, when they explode, they annihilate his enemies and blow up nearby bricks. Destroying bricks does not only allow you to complete the level. There are often many power ups and bonuses hidden within the blocks that only appear after the brick has been demolished. Some standard power ups will improve the strength of your bombs or allow you to control their detonation, as opposed to placing them and running away as fast as possible to avoid injury to the hero. There is also an excellent flamethrower that becomes similar to a super weapon, if the hero can find it. The hero can also employ
numerous tricks, such as detonating chain reactions by laying and igniting numerous bombs at one time.
Most people prefer to play DynaBlaster in single player mode. There is a story to follow, a princess to rescue and high scores to be beaten. Others, however, can take advantage of DynaBlaster’s head-to-head play, where the game can be played against a human assailant. If the story (adventure) does not appeal to a gamer, at least there is the option of attempting to outwit a buddy.
Graphically speaking, DynaBlaster is once again, simple. However, it is very colourful and there are few geometric shapes or pixels to divert one’s attention from the actual game play. The animation of both the heroes and the boss characters is cute and especially well done for the timeframe of this game. In short, though, DynaBlaster is very similar to the traditional Bomber Man, only with a few twists. Although it lacks freshness, it is still entertaining and worth the download. The “battle mode” feature makes the game more replayable, since a human opponent always makes for a good wildcard.
