Halloween Harry was very entertaining to me, despite the fact that I, myself, am not a big fan of arcade style genres. This one, however, did grab my attention after playing it many times as a teenager. The graphics are simple and two dimensional, nice and colourful, and the objective is very simple: rescue the damsel in distress. You get a hold of several different weapons to blow up aliens with, you have a jetpack to fly around with, and there a many different puzzles along the way to solve.
Overall, it is a recipe for fun.
I personally found the fact that I had to solve many different klinds of puzzles just to progress through the game to be one of the most entertaining aspects of Halloween Harry. A nice added feature of the game was the way you had to obtain new weapons, power-ups or health; you had to buy it from different vending machines that were scattered throughout each level of the game.
Halloween Harry was realeased in 1993 but after a year or two, the creators actually re-released the game with a new name: Halloween Harry was re-named Alien Carnage in 1994. This was due to a perception that the original name 'Halloween Harry' would invoke the idea that the
game revolved around Halloween the tradition or holiday. This change in title made no difference at all and the game itself did not really change. The concept was the same, the objective, the weapons, the enemies all stayed the same. It was basically a simple name change, and the graphics were given a bit of a face lift, due to the advance in technology after that couple years of dormancy.
Halloween Harry did win game of the year in 1993 which simply shows it had a alot of potential to go far in the world of gaming, but after 2000 the game was discontinued and only just realeased as freeware in 2007, so all arcade gamers out there should get a look at this game while they now have that chance. It is very entertaining and I also believe there was a sequel made called Zombie Wars for those of you who find they really enjoy it.
Not an out of the ordinary arcade classic, but an entertaining one none the less, any one out there who enjoyed such titles as Duke Nukem 2 or Blakethorne will certainly enjoy this alien shooting, damsel in distress rescuing, vending machine dispensing of weapons arcade adventure.
