I played this game back when it first came out, way back in the day. It was made by id Software, who also made the Quake series and defined computer gaming and the First Person Shooter genre all at the same time. The gameplay consists of a first person style, similar to the Quake engine, in fact, if I remember correctly, this game uses the same engine as the original Quake game. Lots of people didn't like it but I thought it was top notch.
If you like fantasy style games than this is for you.
There are various classes that you can select to play as, which is a big step forward considering when the game was released. The FPS style is not very conducive for an immersive fantasy experience, and there is very little storyline involved, but the classes are well defined. You can play as a wizard and as a warrior, which helps to add some fantasy elements.
The wizard has a ranged style attack which it makes by shooting beams of magic with its staff, while the warrior, obviously, has a more melee based direct attack which he makes with his giant axe. The warrior is much sturdier in combat while the wizard tends to
fall without much effort. Of course, they don't take as many direct hits, either, since they offer a ranged attack instead of hand to hand, so there is some semblance of balance. Still, the wizard seems to be the more advanced choice for those who have played the game before or for those of you who simply are attracted to that sort of character and need a challenge. The first time that I played the game through I played it with the wizard, and it didn't seem to impede my progress in any real way.
Levels and puzzles can sometimes be confusing as is the tradition with older games, but if you're familiar with the genre you should not have any troubles at all. There are various power ups scrambled throughout the levels, and most of the puzzles consist of pressing buttons in a specific order or finding and collecting an item.
The graphics are decent considering the time that the game was released, especially if you crank the resolution up a bit. Of course, the wire frames that the game used were kind of primitive, so everything seems kinda blocks, but if you can get past that it's actually a rather nice looking game. The music is entertaining, which consists of a gothic styled theme, and the sound effects are also well done. There are different sound effects for the different classes as well, which makes each class seem a little more unique.
