The story of Highway Hunter involves, naturally, a race of evil aliens who have come to Earth to take over the entire human race. All of the peoples of the world have
been enslaved by the aliens, and are now working in various occupations to serve the aliens. The user will play the part of a young man who was, by an piece of good fortune, assigned to work in the alien maintenance garage. While there, he sees the MASTER, a prototype for a new alien combat vehicle. The young mechanic steals this one-of-a-kind racing battle tank and takes it out to the highway, intending on a little revenge by blasting the alien overlords to death.
The boundaries of the screen the user will see are set up as the edges of the highway. As the player drives along the open road, he will be assaulted by waves of enemy alien craft from all general directions. The aliens will both fly, and approach him on the highway via the ground. He will have to dispatch the enemies and stay alive. Occasionally, a destroyed enemy will leave a power-up disc in his stead. The power-ups almost exclusively enhance the weapon of the MASTER. Power-ups will increase the frequency of the MASTER’s shots, make the beams larger and more powerful, or will make them more numerous.
The game begins with the user in the first episode, of which there are three. Each episode contains numerous levels with a large and cool boss character at the end. As the levels and episodes progress, the backgrounds will become less and less earthly and more and more alien. The enemy waves also become more numerous and deadly as the game play continues.
Highway Hunter is a good blend of genres that offers a fast pace and a lot of action to keep the player on his or her toes. It is a recommended play for blowing off steam and makes for a very interesting distraction.
