It has so far made 3 sequels and is one of the best selling games of all times. The game features one continuous level set in different parts of the house, with 2 main objectives, destroy all the dead people and get to the bad guy and kill him. The game originally started out as an arcade game and then due to its popularity around the world it was converted to many platforms.

The original Arcade machines rivaled the console releases due to amazing graphics, of course the simplicity of the Arcade OS (DOS based)
let the graphics go wild, and the gun was a big hit, although the lack of a cool weapon as a controller for consoles like the dreamcast and the pc the sales still met expectations of sega.
This big hit let sega develop house of the dead 2, which was not set in a house but in a town. House of the dead 2, 3 and 4 were not big flops but were not as good as the original house of the dead as they lost the original point of game and were unable to sustain the original gore of house of the dead (Increase in graphics quality and the gore of house of the dead one would cause the game to be rated 18 and unsuitable for arcade use).
The original arcade machines are sold for a lot of money even today, but I doubt it will fetch much money at specialist auctions in the future. Although the originals are still wanted today and even copies for consoles like dreamcasts, playstation, pc etc. I believe they are slightly outdated and will be soon dumped in the back of a charity shop, due to a new best seller.
A film called House of the dead was also released inspired by the game and was a big flop only scoring 2 out of 10 at imdb.com and many users comments agreeing with the score.
Conclusion: House of the dead was a fresh game idea in 1996, but sega needs to move on, yes it was good back then (up to the release of house of the dead 3) but the making of the 3 and 4 ruined it, I just hope it does not turn into Halloween the film with 8 sequels when people lost interest by the 4 film.
