Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 11/18/2007
Karateka is an action karate game with realistic animation. The game begins in the fortress of the evil Akuma. The graphics right off the start were quite impressive for the years that this game was created. You as the player are trying to defeat the guards of the castle and eventually face Akuma to rescue the princess.
The combat is shown as a side view of the two fighters. There will be two characters fighting it out, trading each other various punches and kicks.

gets you with a blow, but not attacking or being stuck again can also recover them.
Karateka did not have a save game option as it wasn’t too long and easy to get through in one sitting of game play. When you complete the game you will be reunited with Mariko the princess when you are freeing her from the prison cell she’s been held captive in. Then you must drop your fighting stance and run into the princess’s arms, and then you’ve completed the game! Karateka was a well-designed game with new elements that many hadn’t seen in any game before. It was what began a new genre in the gaming industry. The game has amazing features that made it what it became. There are various opponents that will increase in skill level each time you defeat a new one. The animation of this game is quite smooth that go great with the simple graphics.
The game didn’t consist of any dialogue throughout the entire game. The way the characters made their gestures and the music created the story all in itself. It was great how the creator was able to do this and the gamer still be able to know what was going on or what they were going to have to do. Karateka has been a well-designed game in many ways. All the great aspects that come along with this have made it become such a well-known game for many age groups. The game is not too difficult to play. With the simple plot and the gradual difficulty change even if you are new to the game you will grow with it. With the amount of chances you have to defeat someone you eventually will get good enough to assassinate them. This game has made a new genre of gaming come alive, now its time to make your computer come alive and give it a try like the rest of the world.

I remember playing this game as a 6 year old kid and being frustrated cause I couldn't figure out how to move foward or to kick and punch. Somehow I figured it all out and made my way all the way to the end to the final boss and of course got beat. It was so frustrating but I kept trying and trying and trying but to no avail. I remember begging my mother to get me the Atari 7800 cause they had just released the game and I wanted the another crack at it but guess what I had the same problems all over again I coudn't figure out how to walk with the joystick or to kick and punch. Looking back at this game I don't know why I wasted so much time into, it's a pretty crappy game but to remember old child hood memories I say it's worth it.
