Game Review (written by Sgigere) Added on: 05/16/2007
This is a great game. The graphics are nice, although the action on screen can be hard to see often because it is pretty dark. I liked the graphics quite a bit actually.
The game blends a bit of two styles together. First, it has a two dimensional style which we have all come to love. It is almost reminiscent of games like DOOM. The second style is almost three dimensional. It is a very unique blend that gives the player a special experience while playing.
The game is in top down view, which I am personally a fan of. The controls are not too bad. It is similar to many other RPG games, in my opinion. I liked the various RPG elements that were put into the game. The game is very close to the gameplay of Gauntlet. I loved gauntlet, as many people did, so to me this is a good thing.
Another thing that I enjoyed was the dark style that the game had. The character classes, of which there are quite a few, are not typical. Instead, they are oriented towards a darker theme. The abilities also reflect this and add to the unique experience offered by the game. For example, there is a

skull item in the game which turns the player into the grim reaper for a brief period of time.
One drawback of the game was in its monsters. I believe that any good role playing game should have a variety of monsters, each with different attack patterns and behaviors. However, this game did not offer this. Its monster types are nothing special. They are the more "typical" monsters, such as spiders and giants, etc.
The AI was somewhat above average. The monsters did have a variety of attacks and techniques that are typically not found in many RPGs. However, the creature variety in each level was somewhat lacking. The levels eventually became very repetitive. I would have liked to see more monsters in each level. This would have stopped the game from losing its initial luster.
Overall, this game was worth playing. As for replay value, I found it difficult to decide if it would be worth playing again. The different classes do offer game variety, but the monsters are too similar in my opinion. It’s definitely worth playing through once, especially if you are like me and like hack and slash games like gauntlet.

This game is a lot like Heretic mixed with Gauntlet. This comes as no surprise, as it was put out by the same company that made Heretic and Hexen. This game features great graphics, a 3D environment and hack-and-slash RPG gameplay - very reminiscent of gauntlet, except your wizard doesn't get as hungry. I highly recommend it if you want to crawl through a dungeon for a few dozen hours.
