Magic Pockets by Renegade Software and the Bitmap Brothers is an arcade game that came out in 1992. It also appeared on Saturday morning television as an interactive show where players could shout directions into the phone (like go left or go right) to control the character on the screen. The theme song, “Doin’ the Do” was performed by Betty Boo on the game and on the television show. The show was actually competition for other shows like Motor mouth and Going Live.
The game is about a young boy, called Bitmap Kid.
He has this magical pair of pants that have magic pockets in them and they have an unlimited amount of storage space. Because of the infinite amount of storage space in his pockets, he decides to store all of his toys in them. There are creatures that live in his pockets and one day they get bored and decide they are going to keep all the toys for themselves so they can play with them. Now, Bitmap Kid has to go in the pockets and get all his toys back.
Magic Pockets is basically a platform game and therefore you get just basic movements, like jumping, walking and throwing stuff to beat the enemies. There are a total of four areas in this
game and they are split up into different levels including a bonus level. These areas are the cave, the mountains, the river and the jungle. In the bonus level, you must outsmart the creature in order to get the toy that has to be taken back. For example, when you find the level with the bike, you have to do a bike race in order to win it back.
For each area of the game, your character has a different type of attack. Each of these different attacks can be “charged up” by simply holding down the fire button so you can throw a larger projectile. The biggest thing that you can use has the ability to suck up your enemies and then it turns them into something that you can pick up. These items you can pick up include, but are not limited to, sweets (which give you more points) and gold or silver stars (which give you more items like helmets). Silver stars give you the opportunity to get the gold stars. The helmets can range from teleporters to laser beams to invincibility, but these you only get for a limited amount of time. You can even use bubble gum to blow big bubbles to float upwards. There is no time limit in the game, but the enemies that chase you do have a bad habit of growing bigger and bigger, so watch out.
All in all this game is addictive and interesting! If you want pass your time well and with fun it’s for you! I highly recommend downloading it!
