Mario and Luigi, right down to the names of the main characters, is a platform game that is unashamedly based on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System’s wildly popular Super Mario Brothers. It was released in the middle nineties as freeware after development by Mike Wiering. Wiering created Mario and Luigi to practice programming in VGA graphic displays.
Mario and Luigi is a very decent clone of the Super Mario Brothers. It should be noted, however, that the option to play as the second plumber brother, Luigi, is not available in this game.

Mario and Luigi is a very decent clone of the Super Mario Brothers. It should be noted, however, that the option to play as the second plumber brother, Luigi, is not available in this game. This does not make the game less satisfying. Playing as Mario offers as much as the game can give, anyway. The game play is the same as any of the other Nintendo
Mario jump and run style of platform games. Mario can run and jump and can dispatch enemies by bouncing upon their noggins and kicking them from the playing field. This most noticeably happens to the turtles. There is always the option to avoid enemies, as well, and Mario can outrun many of the baddies he encounters. He will also collect items such as coins in order to rack up bigger and bigger scores. Most of the characters in the game, the backgrounds, the items, and even the procedures are straight takeoffs from the Nintendo Mario brothers games, so there really won’t be anything new to see or do.
Mario and Luigi features a total of six levels. There are also several hidden levels that the user will be able to access by descending downward into the big green pipes. There will be a lot of bonus items to find, including mushrooms to make Mario grow into Super Mario, and of course the point-building coins. The hidden levels will also contain many of the classic bricks that Mario can smash with his head, revealing even more items.
This version of the Mario Brothers features a slow scroll that has a tendency to clog up, but the controls are easy to master, even for a beginning gamer. There are only a few uncomplicated buttons to remember. The left and right arrow keys will control the direction in which Mario moves, and the control key will allow him to run. The alt button equates to jumping and the space bar will allow Super Mario to fire his fireball. If the user is trying to force Mario into a pipe, he must use the down arrow. The ease of the controls makes up for the choppy scroll, so most users will be able to time their jumps appropriately when negotiating the platforms. This is the trickiest part of the game, with the rest of the game play being identical to a standard Mario game.
