Metal Gear is the “founding father” of the Metal Gear Series. One of the first games to pioneer the idea of Espionage in video games, Metal Gear allowed the player to not only experiment with shooting but sneaking past enemies. In essence, it can be said that Metal Gear attacked previous gaming genres by creating its own: Tactical Espionage.
After playing newer games of the Metal Gear series, I wanted to go back and experience the story from the beginning. As always you are Snake, code name for the protagonist of the Metal Gear games, and have to infiltrate a military compound.
Despite the simplicity of the controls, move and shoot, the game influences an interesting cocktail of gamer emotions that keep the player on the edge of his seat.
The story holds true to all through the game as the player goes through a large area where he will encounter sticky situations with armed guards, traps, and even cameras. Over time you go from being unarmed to having a full arsenal of deadly weapons that aid you on your quest to the where Metal Gear is. The game offers great surroundings, graphics, characters, and an incredible story line that will make you want to play it again and its descendents: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and (not
yet released) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Looking back at my experience with this game, I especially loved the graphics for its time. We all love pixilated scenes of realistic vistas, but Metal Gear makes sure to immerse the player into a world of obstacles that either help the player hide from the enemy or increase his/her odds of being discovered. As in other shooting games, you can eliminate your enemies with guns or explosive weapons but the idea behind the Metal Gear series has never been to shoot anyone. In fact, the idea has been to get past the enemy and not allow anyone to know of your existence within the compound.
I would divulge details of the story but I believe that as a hardcore fan of the Metal Gear series it would ruin it for you. If you feel that this game is for you, then download it. If you are a fan of the Metal Gear series and you want to see how and where it all started then download this incredible game.
