Moon Patrol is one of the great classic games. Each time I play it, I am automatically transported back to the days when my computer was the Commodore 64. This game is addictive. I mean, crack cocaine addictive. Why? First of all, it is because the game itself is easy to understand, the controls are logical, and the game play is simplistic. All of these factors mean zero learning curve, and that you can jump in to it right away. But, that is where the easiness ends, and the challenge begins.
The many and varied levels require a lot of concentration, and result in a lot of fun. You will find yourself playing the game for longer than you expected. The graphics are decent enough
to keep you glued to the screen, believing that you are actually driving the moon vehicle. The assortment of enemies that you will encounter is colourful and acts independently of each other, as they fire, jump, and fly.
There are several dangers to avoid throughout the game. The vehicle that you drive has two cannons, one on the front, and one on the top, and towards the rear of the vehicle. With each blast, the guns fire simultaneously at various targets. You destroy rocks and boulders, as well as other various threats on the ground, while at the same time you completely obliterate airborne assailants. In addition to the cannons, your blue moon rover also has the ability to jump. You will find this to be a non-expendable feature, and believe me, you will have more than enough opportunities to use it. You have three types of things that you can jump. To begin with, this is the moon, so there are craters, and you will have to leap over the natural craters, as well as the craters that are created when you destroy certain types of targets. Then, there are the rock and boulders. Some of them are going to be short enough, or small enough to jump over them. Last, but not least on the list are some of the assailants that you will encounter. Some are short enough to jump over, and others, with careful timing, can be jumped over in there “dormant” state.
The intensity of the game can truly be felt, as you will be firing and jumping at the same time, being careful to use perfect timing. This game is truly a challenge that you will willingly take on over and over again. This is definitely one of the all time greats.
