Game Review (written by Sperret) Added on: 02/04/2007
Obake is one of the best games I have ever played for the pc. Obake is a great Japanese game that I’ve been playing for years now and I still am today. You start off as a ghost named Obake who must defeat the ghost king.
When I first played this game I realized that the game play reminded me most about Nintendo’s Kirby, with the ability to possess enemies and use there skills this game gives you loads of possibilities to defeat enemies.
As you start off you’ll soon realize that you have two health bars a stamina and soul-power bar.
The stamina bar will tell you how much health the person you possessed has left after you run out of stamina you will be turned back into ghost form. The soul-power bar will tell you how much health your ghost has left before Obake dies.
As in Mario you hop around and can collect coin-like objects which will give you an extra life after you collect one-hundred. There are many different types of enemies you can possess such as sword fighting cats, or gun slinging army men. Each of these enemies have certain skills which you will need to fly, jump cliffs, glide, or even become invincible for a short period of time. This adds to the challenge of the game because you will need to have certain abilities to pass certain spots, making the puzzle parts of this game all the more difficult, you’ll find yourself trying to pass a level multiple times before you realize what skill it is you need first.
There are a huge number of levels each divided into seven different worlds. Each world has its own distinct feature such as a snowy area or in a cave. One of the most exciting level is the castle where you must obtain keys in order to open doors. Each world has its own end-level boss which is difficult but not impossible to beat. One disappointment was the fact that some of the bosses began to repeat themselves but that didn’t bother me to much as this game has the many other exciting features to keep you on your toes.
In this game the music was a factor that was a true gem. Most of the levels have different tracks and none seemed to ever get irritating. I have never had to turn off the volume ever. In fact the music is one of the biggest reasons I still play it now.
This is one of the most innovative and classic pc games ever. It feels like Kirby, but it has added so many new and classic elements, it separates it from anything I have ever played before. I really loved this game, and urge that you check it out.
