One Must Fall is by far one of my most favorite classic DOS games of all time. It combines all of the aspects of a good 2D fighter game with the awesome power of 10 giant robots for characters. I used to play this game all the time in the mid 90’s even though I only had 4 robots available to me at the time since it was just shareware. I’ve only just recently played as the other 7 thanks to DOS game downloading and I must say I’m impressed with what else the full game has to offer.

One Must Fall has 3 different modes to offer gamers: One Player (Story), Two Players (Versus), and the most interesting of the three, Tournament
mode.
One player, or as I like to call it Story mode, puts you in the shoes of 1 of 10 different pilots, each with their own unique skills and storyline. Once you choose a pilot you can then choose any of the 10 robots in the game. The color of the robot does depend on your character but if you want to change it to your own personal tastes, just hit the 1, 2 or 3 keys to change primary, secondary and tertiary colors on your robot respectively. As you battle your way past the other 9 characters, you learn more about the history of your character as you make your way to the final boss known as Kreissack. His machine is super powerful so you will need to know enough about your own robot to beat him. Good Luck!
Two players is a one-on-one competition where two players duke it out in a flurry of jarred bolts, scarred chassis and scrap metal to see who is king of the robots. Just pick a pilot and a robot and get ready to either shred your buddy in triumph or be shredded by your buddy in shame because after all, ONE MUST FALL!
Tournament mode is a lot like One Player but with a major difference. Instead of choosing one of the 10 story pilots, you make your own original pilot, choose one of four difficulty settings and character portraits, and take him/her through one of four major tournaments. In each of these competitions you must work your way up through the ranks, earning cash for upgrades for your pilot or robot along the way, until you make your way to the title championship. Also instead of picking any of the 10 robots at the start, your character starts with the first machine, the Jaguar. As you fight more and more, you can then “trade in” your robot for a different one. Along with the 10 robots in this game, there is also a hidden one you can find and use only in this mode (though it does make a special appearance in Story mode, hint). The replay ability of this mode is great because even after you’ve beaten all four tournaments, you can go back on these competitions again and again because as your pilot and robot get better upgrades, so do your opponents. Have Fun!
So if you’ve played all of your favorite fighter games to the point of sheer boredom and you want to try something else, give this classic DOS game a try. You won’t be disappointed.
