One Must Fall Beta was also marketed as One Must Fall Battlegrounds. It is the sequel to One Must Fall 2097, and was developed over several years by Diversions Entertainment before being released as freeware in the early nineties. Instead of featuring the side-scrolling, head-to-head fighting engine of its predecessor, One Must Fall Beta offers the user a three-dimensional combat arena.
One Must Fall Beta offers several styles of play for the user. There is a single player mode against competent artificially intelligent robots. There is a multiplayer format, and the game also supports mega-multiplayer online gaming for many users at once.

One Must Fall Beta offers several styles of play for the user. There is a single player mode against competent artificially intelligent robots. There is a multiplayer format, and the game also supports mega-multiplayer online gaming for many users at once. This is likely the most popular method of play.
Similar to the original One Must Fall, this version of the game allows the
user to select a robot and a pilot for the robot. There are twenty different arenas to battle within, all with their own unique themes ranging from a desert to a space station. Most are very well drawn and are colorful and engaging to the eye. There are eight different robots, each with its own attributes and combinations. Five of the robots were initially slated for One Must Fall 2097 but they were modified to fit the more modern look of Beta. Three completely new robots were added, but all the robots, including the remakes, are powerful and fun to play. Legend, Gargoyle and Katana are a few. Again, each of the robots has a different look; they are not palette switching clones. The game also features fifty selectable pilots to further customize the fighting adventure. The pilots all have different levels of four basic attributes: power, focus, agility and endurance.
When it comes to the fighting, there are what seems like an infinite number of moves and combination moves. Each user will develop a favorite signature move. Favorites include Jaguar’s giant leap or Berserker Rage and Katana’s super fireball.
The game play is action packed and fast paced. There are a lot of controls to remember, and a lot of combinations of buttons to strike in order to make necessary moves or perform super leaps. Often times, two or keys must be struck simultaneously in order to effect a move. This makes the game play complex and very often frustrating. Still, One Must Fall Beta is a good play with only a few bugs and an interesting futuristic theme. The robotic fun carries throughout the series, and fans of it will enjoy One Must Fall Beta.
