This is one of the greatest games I have ever played. While it has no multiplayer capabilities, it does not leave the player wanting. If you're a fan of space flight simulators, than this is the game for you. "Privateer 2: The Darkening" has it all: A well developed story; a whole galaxy full of diverse worlds and bases; space combat; 18 fully customizable ship chassis; and many different ways of making money! One of the greatest things about this game is the sheer variety of equipment you can buy for your ship.

One of the greatest things about this game is the sheer variety of equipment you can buy for your ship. There’s enough ordinance to blow up half the galaxy!
At the start of the game your character knows only that he was in a crash about 2 weeks ago. He seems
to have amnesia and can't remember anything past that. Meanwhile, he has to start looking for answers to his past, and make a living while he does it. As the game progresses he learns more about who he is while he makes connections with all sorts of different people from pirates to the military. Your character can make money in this game like a merchant by trading commodities, or a mercenary by taking missions that involve combat.
Privateer 2 is basically an early version of Freelancer (which was created by the same Chris Roberts), with all the features except netplay. The story progress is shown in FMV cutscenes starring Clive Owen.
When the game starts, you have just enough credits to buy the cheapest ship and enough equipment to keep it in the air. From there the sky's the limit as they say. Your diary tells you that you should maybe go back to the hospital that treated you, but what you do is entirely up to you. You can ignore the main story for as long as you want and build up credits in the meantime. And you can take a break to just run missions or cargo as much as you want. You pursue the secrets of your own past at your leisure.
There are certain references in the game and storyline to the documentation, which is readily available online from many different fansites devoted to “Privateer 2: The Darkening” and the rest of the Wing Commander™ series. This game is highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of space flight simulators. Privateer 2 while over 10 years old, is still one of the best space flight sims ever created.
