Ah, the joys of Quake. Nothing can be more stress relieving than sitting back with a mug of tea and some chocolate digestives, and blasting the heck out of inter-dimensional monster thingies. Very much following in the path of the Doom series, Quake is a first person shooter, but in stunning 3D.
It follows the story of some dude who, for reasons nobody pays any attention to, is running around blowing nasty bad people into nasty bad people chunks. Well, I say people. Some are people, some are just massive misshapen lumps of flesh.

It follows the story of some dude who, for reasons nobody pays any attention to, is running around blowing nasty bad people into nasty bad people chunks. Well, I say people. Some are people, some are just massive misshapen lumps of flesh. One is much like a giant, nightmarish, electricity wielding chicken. They’re all fun to explode, though.
Naturally, you’ll get a nice arsenal of weaponry, ranging from basic pistols and shotguns,
to a nail gun, to massive things that make you grin and cackle when you find them. The grenade launcher is amusing, as its ammo is very, very bouncy and hard to control. Thus, just as you’ve begun smiling in a smug way at a group of zombies you’ve just killed with grenade, you’ll realize the thing has actually landed behind you – leaving just enough time for you to say “What the-” before GAME OVER.
There are power-ups too, invincibility and extra strength, which are useful for a first time player, but, in my opinion, detract from the fun of mashing up enemies who could kill you, if you put a foot wrong.
While, perhaps, not the most mentally taxing experience you’ll ever have, it’s good for some amusement to blast away the hours while you wait for something equally exciting to happen in real life. Still, the game does have puzzles of a sort, in the form of finding buttons to push etc. before it is possible to advance. There are friendly pits of lava which should be jumped over and not, I repeat NOT swam in. Unless you got that invincibility power up. There are traps – mostly things that’ll squish you or fill you full of spikes. And, naturally, there are a lot of big bosses.
All in all, Quake is a nice first person shooter game. Classic of the genre. Really worth to play.
