Revolution X is a rather fun game, gameplay wise it's nothing much beyond the standard side-scrolling rail shooter fair, however among other things that set it apart, it features a soundtrack by Aerosmith, the band itself and quite a bit of weirdness thrown in to round it out.
The gameplay as mentioned in the above is rather insubstantial, but consistent nonetheless. But there is a rather perplexing charm to taking down waves of faceless minions ranging from the basic minion, mutants, generic savages to highly visible ninja, armed with exploding CD's that can even take down vehicles given enough shots.
Needless to say the minions themselves are rather varied by level and abundant. You can even choose your path at some points in levels. The backgrounds are destructible often revealing ammunition and at some points in the game extra bonuses.
The story goes as the brief summary follows: the corrupt neo industrial governmental militaristic oppressive alliance known as the new order nation has recently taken over the US, started seizing everyone between 13 and 30 and generally establish themselves as evil, with you on your way to club X to see Aerosmith, caught in the middle of it all. Normally this would score low on my chart, but then again, story wasn't a selling point at the time. There is almost no plot development of any kind throughout
the game other that the beginning and end and it doesn't take itself seriously what so ever.
Levels range from the aforementioned club to the Amazon, sometimes you would stumble into secret areas, but largely the levels end up at the same ending area where you fight the boss. The levels in themselves are colorful and varied, though you might encounter the odd section where you'll fight off enough enemies to make space invaders look conservative.
The boss battles are pretty much among the hardest parts of the game, especially toward the end of it. Among other things that can be said of it is that it originally was made for the arcade, hence the difficulty in some areas.
In closing it is a rather fun, if cheesy game that doesn't take itself seriously and could be a good way to blow off some steam or simply kill time.
