Rick Dangerous is a colorful little single player platform game starring a British double agent that is a weird cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond. It was released to the commercial market for the first time in the late nineties, and a sequel quickly followed that picked up the plot right where this rendition left off. Both games were designed by Core Design and released by Rainbird Software. Rick Dangerous was ported to multiple formats, including the Commodore 64, the Amiga, and the ZX Spectrum.

While the character of Rick Dangerous is somewhat similar to Indiana Jones, the plot is also reminiscent of the movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” The opening scene of the video game is even similar to the movie,
showing Rick Dangerous fleeing from a giant impeding boulder. In the opening level, Dangerous is sent to the Amazon jungle in order to find the lost Goolu tribe. Unfortunately, he does find the tribe…when his plane crashes…and they are a terribly hostile group. He spends the rest of the level fighting jungle creatures and the natives themselves. Similar to Indy, he is then sent to other venues and more adventures. The second level is found in the Egyptian pyramids, and after than, Dangerous will be sent to the German castle Scwarzendumpf to rescue a group of allied soldiers. After that, the soldiers will tip him off that the Germans intend to bomb London with missiles. He will have to stop the attack by infiltrating the German missile base.
The game play of Rick Dangerous is very similar to the majority of platform games. He can jump, run and climb. His basic weapons include his pistol, for which he can carry a limited amount of ammunition; a packet of dynamite, with which he can make bombs; and a weird pogo stick that can paralyze his enemies, thus saving ammunition. Rick Dangerous will face a variety of enemies, mostly reflective of the levels he is on, and there will also be traps to diffuse, offering a mild amount of puzzle solving action. Dangerous will usually use his pistol or pogo stick for dispatching enemies, but sometimes bombs will take them out, as well.
Overall, Rick Dangerous is a very standard, but still pleasant platform game. The character is fun, and the weapons he uses are unique and interesting. It has a lot of redeeming features, including the smooth scroll and good level design. In short, this is a nice distraction with a certain level of addictiveness. It is a recommended download.
