Based on the movie of the same title this edition is very different from the platform basis of the previous incarnations. This is very much a 3d walk around a city type of game. No more challenged or end of level baddies, very much in the same vein as Tom Clancy style games each level has an objective that needs to be completed.
At times this game will frustrate as it is not a simple all out shoot-em up which some prefer.
One of the first things that you need to do, a la the movie, is to follow a van around old Detroit. Follow too closely and toy will be shot at if you are coming from behind, the best strategy here is to follow from over a block as they cannot get you from there. Don’t stray too far as if you decided to start exploring it will all be over.
From your check point your out of the squad car and on foot, best to try this a few times to get used to the idea of shooting and walking all at the same time as sighting the enemy can be difficult. You need to rescue your old partner, Officer Lewis
(from the first two other movies). You have a 120 second time limit to do this and the challenge is not easy! Practice makes perfect here and your time would be well spent just taking target practice as the controls are NOT like the FPS that we are used to these days. Graphical capabilities are also pretty poor as well so keep a watchful eye out. Driving is hard so keep an eye out for the white dot on the steering wheel, also a good shortcut is across grass and dirt but you will lose time so be so careful. The onboard tracker will give you an idea of the corners that are coming up and practice will tell you where to drive rather than to try and tail the van.
Upon entering the building the biggest help I can give you is to keep the cross hair in the middle of the screen and shoot like hell! When you get to the end Officer Lewis is a hostage, watch closely but don’t take too long and aim just above her right shoulder for the kill.
The second stage is much the same only you have been accused of the murder of Officer Lewis! Just beware all the time of all of the civilians, you must avoid them at al costs as too many kills will be the end of our cybernetic officer hero.
More driving is involved as you progress, just don’t hit things as this will kill off the car and getting shot is also not a good idea for the most part. Later in the game you will get the chance to fly, yup he does fly with a jet pack! This game came out around the same time as Terminator 2 on most systems and by comparison is superb! In between levels you are subjected to a very cartoony news section where the animated readers effectively relay what is happening in Detroit at present and this is what your going to be doing. As you would expect ED209 plays a part.
About level four: don’t be too put off by the ninja, yes he is good, but keep shooting and you'll down him without any worries! The final stage is flying using the "gyro-pack". Land and air based targets are the order of the day, pretty silly but you got to do it. I forget some of the back story here so just watch the film! One more battle with the robotic ninja, just shoot to kill again and its over!
But you can always play it one more time. Good game.
