Game Review (written by Mikegarrett75) Added on: 10/21/2006
This is an excellent game for anyone whether a fan of the comics or not. Even though it is an older style arcade game it still has pretty good graphics for a VGA game display. Spiderman is easily recognizable as well as the villains and the buildings in each level. The game controls are easy to use. The arrow keys to move and the space bar to fire the webbing.
The difficulty is in coordinating your jumps and swings to avoid the villains. Since, you cannot hit or defeat any of the villains or hazards. All need to be avoided. The game is classified as an arcade game but it also has a large puzzle component. Each board has multiple switches and levers that must be turned on or off in the correct sequence in order to unlock the next area. The entire game plays like a large maze with Spiderman wall crawling and swinging to avoid villains, traps, and hazards and sometimes backtracking to areas already visited to activate switches that didn’t seem to do anything before in order to continue. The life meter is a unique touch. It is a large image of Spiderman that stands on the right hand side of the screen, as you receive damage the color in his name fades then his skeleton gradually begins to be exposed. When you completely expose his skeleton, game over. The nice thing is that you simply start at the same stage you were on when you died. If you have reached a point where you feel stuck and think you missed something you can start from scratch.
On the down side there is no back story to guide you as to what the point of the game is. You simply start with no idea where to go or what to do. You simply have to do a lot of trial and error exploration and prepare to die a couple of times before you figure out how to go forward in the game at some point. I think it would be easier if you could defeat the enemies instead of just stunning them. Even when stunned they still damage you if you touch them. The other thing that might be useful would be the ability to really jump instead of just hop. This is overcome by practicing your swinging technique.
Also remember that Spiderman may not be able to stick to all surfaces, so proceed with caution you may get trapped with no way back. The game needs a pause function, but you can always press the escape key and leave that screen up when not in immediate danger. Also there is no way to save the game progress once you completely exit so it must be solved in one sitting or else you have to remember your way through the labyrinthine levels from the start.
All things considered this is an excellent game that does not require learning a lot of commands or moves to complete it.
