Valkyrie Fight is a pretty cool little freeware fighting game. Based upon the PS1 game Valkyrie Profile the game transports the characters from that game into a fighting game. This is actually a pretty good effort. It has a large selection of characters a well built system and plays really smoothly. The tag feature is really well implemented as well. As with any tag game you choose two different characters to play as and can swap them out at any time during the fight.
There are two ways of swapping your characters. A regular swap in which one character jumps off screen and your second jumps on screen. The second is a super swap where the second character jumps in and immediately pulls of a super move. This can lead to some killer combos and is a lot of fun to use. Each character has its own unique set of techniques and abilities making them all worth using. The game has a good set of modes to play, Arcade, Vs 2P, Vs comp, Survival and practice.
The game isn’t without its flaws though. When it comes down to competitive play the games a bit button mashie letting you put together strings with minimal effort of mashing the attack
buttons. Also the balancing is a little off With Mystina being able to launch full on assaults from clear across the screen making her very hard to get in on. Also Loki, Arcade Modes Boss, is a cheap little jerk and you’ll curse his very existence.
Another plus is the music. The soundtrack is just about ripped straight from the main game and thus is very good. The battle theme rocks for these kinds of fights and is very epic. You feel like it’s a battle for the fate of Asgard which seems lacking from most fighters. The main menu theme is really nice to.
The customization options are nice to. You can turn on things like auto guard, Turbo mode, adjust the timer and even use a color edit for all the sprites in the game. They took great care to make the game work for you and it shows when you much around in the settings.
This happens to bring up one last flaw and that’s that the game is in Japanese so figuring out what something does in the menu can take some trial and error but over all its pretty simple to figure out.
Aside from these few flaws the game is very well put together and completely worth the Download.
I give it an 8.0 for being solidly built and a lot of fun with 2 people or even by yourself but still having a few glaring flaws.
