The title of War Gods is a bit misleading, but its close enough for what the gamer is going to get from this game. Don’t be expecting Mars or Ares to pop out as a character choice. With the exception of the Egyptian god of the underworld, Anubis, the characters in this game are fabricated immortals. That does not detract from the game play, but for those users with a love for ancient mythology, this is not the direction to take.
The game itself is very similar to the Mortal Kombat series.

The game itself is very similar to the Mortal Kombat series. There are intensely gory moves and wounds, and some horrific finishing moves and final moments. Needless to say, this is not a game for young children, despite the fact that the violence is animated.
With the release of this game in the very late nineties, it definitely has the capability to show some real blood and guts.
The plot of the story is not nearly as important as the game play, but it goes like this. Many years ago, a spaceship carrying an unusual ore crash landed on Earth. This ore shattered into ten pieces and managed to spread to various corners of the globe. Ten people find this ore and it turns them into the war gods from the title. Similar to the Highlander and his “there can be only one” quest for heads, the War Gods seek to destroy one another in order to possess all the stones and become the ultimate fighter in the realm.
To begin play, the user must first choose which of the ten immortals he or she wishes to control. There are both male and female characters available and all have different backgrounds and unique skills. Some of the characters are very modern, such as CY-5 the Cyborg or Warhead, the missile-toting soldier. Others are more along the lines of the mythological creatures, such as Vallah the Norse Valkyrie or Anubis. Others still are magically oriented. These characters include Voodoo, a houngan or witch doctor; Pagan the witch; and Ahau Kin, who represents the high priest of some South American civilization.
Play, as mentioned above, is person-to-person combat and can be played by two human opponents posing as the characters of their choice. The violence surpasses even Mortal Kombat and there are some exceptionally wicked death scenes. Players can choose to finish their opponents with any of their standard moves, or roundhouse them right out of the arena. Adversaries land with a crunch of bone and a spurt of blood, sometimes sailing through walls or trees on the way out. The concept of the game is very simple. Win the fight. Still, there are plenty of moves and sequences to master in order to achieve such a basic task. There should be enough to keep a gamer busy for a while.
