Sea Battle is a strategy game where two opposing naval forces, of varying ship types (i.e. battleships, submarines… etc.) face off in a strategic battle to capture your opponents harbor and even more importantly, protect your own harbor. From laying mines to torpedoing an enemy ship Sea Battle seeks realism, but fails to find it on a large scale. Real or not the game is loads of fun to play with remarkable high replay value. It requires two players
Game play: There are two phases to each turn, the strategy phase, and the combat phase.
In the strategy phase you have the options of moving your ships around the naval map. This is where the real game occurs, finding the best way to match your ships up with your opponent’s ships is critical. Each player starts out the game with a total of thirteen ships. The battle phase of the game is rather important as well. Even a good match up can go terribly wrong, if the battle is not played to your strengths and your opponent’s weaknesses. Laying mines is an important part of the game either disabling ships, or disabling the straits they need to go through.
Graphics: For a game made in 1980 the graphics are on par with the time. Nothing
new was attempted that had not already been done, no 3-d, come on this is 1980. Very basic in the color scheme, but again, this was made in 1980 so give it a break. The ships are easy to tell from one another with just a little practice.
Sound: The sound is very basic. The sonar beep is very well done, but overall it just a bunch of beeps, and a bunch of beeps in repetition gets very annoying and very fast. But if you enjoy the old school sound then Sea Battle should be a joy to play for you.
The sound is just no good to me, but plenty of things make up for that. The strategy is always exciting, and the game itself is just loads of fun to play over and over again. Graphics are NOT what make this game a keeper. The game is good because it is a great game. It is still worth playing in modern days, if only to see the forerunner to great games like Pirates! Pirates!
