The Space Hulk was released in 1993 for the IBM PC and the Amiga. It is a first-person shooter that was developed by Electronics Arts. The game also involves strategic planning. The game was adapted from the board game released in the 1980s with the same title created by Games Workshop.
You will have to lead your soldiers in missions against the Genestealers. Your men will be grouped into squads aboard starships called Space Hulks. You can switch among the five men in your team.
You will be given a map before the start of the mission and will be briefed regarding the objectives of each mission.
You can play on a full campaign mode composed of 50 missions or you can play stand-alone games as well as the tutorials. You can customize your men’s armors. As you complete each mission, your squad will gain experience that will help them gain better skills. More experience for the men means the ability to perform in succeeding missions.
The graphics of the game gave it a dark atmosphere that worked well for the game; the plot is decent and the graphics is good; the sound effects and music are amazing. The voice narration is vital in creating the atmosphere and the mood
of the game. When you put all the elements together, the result is a good game that will have you playing non-stop for many hours.
There is a top-down map that you can use to issue your commands. The game is in the first person perspective and you can choose to switch views between the different men at any time during the game. There is a Terminator View Screen where you can monitor your men’s views. There are smaller monitors that show the views of the other men in your team. The game is played in real time but there is a “Freeze Time” mode where for a given time limit, you can pause the game but continue to input instructions to your men.
Two years later a sequel entitled Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels was released. The game is very difficult so it is best played by experienced gamers. Novice gamers will have a hard time finishing the game and might even become frustrated with it. The AI is pretty hard to beat but if you like first-person shooter games that offer a lot of difficult challenges then this game may just be perfect for you.
