The Mario Teaches Typing is a wonderful educational game that teaches typing to children (or even adults who don’t know how to type). It was released in 1991 for DOS. The versions for the other platforms were also released in the 90s. There was also a Mario Teaches Typing 2 that was released in 1996.
The game features the characters from the popular Mario series—Mario, Luigi and the Princess Toadstool. What’s great about this game is a part from the Mario characters that make the typing lessons fun, there are also cartoon hands that show the player which fingers to use to type correctly.

What’s great about this game is a part from the Mario characters that make the typing lessons fun, there are also cartoon hands that show the player which fingers to use to type correctly. The right finger lights up on the screen. This way, you not just use random fingers to hit the keys, you actually use the right
fingers to type. Using the right fingers to type is important for typing efficiency.
The game features five modes: Mario’s Smash and Dash, Mario’s Wet World Challenge, Mario’s Tunnel of Doom, Mario’s Expert Express and Mario’s Chalkboard. The Smash-n-Dash Game is the typing lesson for beginners. This game involves just typing in letters repetitively so that you can memorize their positions. The character you choose (Mario and company) would break block as you typed in each key. The Wet World Challenge is the Intermediate level of the game and practice short words using the letters that can be found in the home row. The home row is the center row where the letters A-S-D-F-G and others are found. In the Tunnel of Doom, the players will be made to type in full sentences. In the Mario’s Expert Express, players need to type in full paragraphs. Meanwhile, you can see your typing status in the Mario chalkboard. This chalkboard pops up after each typing exercise. It will show you your WPM (words per minute) and will also tell you your problem keys so you can work on them.
As you learn to type, your character will also provide you the on-screen entertainment. Mario, Luigi or the Princess will advance to the next level when you learn to type perfectly. Another cute thing about this game is you get a Mario certificate that signifies how you successfully completed the typing course.
This is a great typing tutorial for kids because it presents the lessons in a fun format. If I had discovered this the first time I started to learn typing, I would probably have learned to type faster. This game is fantastic because it is both fun and educational. If you need to teach any kid how to type, download this game for the child.
