Dogfight was probably my favourite of all the Amiga flight Sims, with F18 interceptor coming a close second. The big plus for Dogfight was the range of planes available to fly. And not just the number of planes but the differences between them. The Russian and American jets were pretty different. Throw in the WWII aircraft and biplanes and it gave the game great longevity.
One of the things I always found funniest was beating someone using a much 'worse' plane. The modern jets were theoretically the best.
However, I regularly used to beat my brother with him in an F16 and me in a spitfire. The thing to realise is that the spitfire was much more manoeuvrable. Plus an added bonus - the heat seeking missiles carried by the F16 wouldn't lock onto the old planes. That meant that if you could get the spitfire in close you had a great chance of winning.
The single player game was pretty good, although the missions were a little one dimensional at times. The only real difference between all of the missions was the scenery - which at the time was pretty good. There were six or seven different areas to play in. I seem to remember the middle east and Korea being among
them.
Dogfight's real strength lay in the two player. The competitive element added a dimension to the game that made it a must have for any self respecting Amiga owner. I'm not sure if you could link two Amiga’s up and play full screen head to head, but a couple of friends with PC's did just that and it made a great game superb. Not being able to see the screen of you opponent made it that much more nerve wracking.
I suppose that the real beauty of dogfight was the way you could approach the game. Most flight Sims require endless amounts of practice and completing training before you can embark on any missions. With dogfight however, provided you had two joysticks, you could jump straight into the two player game against someone equally as rubbish as you and have fun. And as you both got better the single player missions would become more accessible. In effect the two player game, in addition to being great fun, was the training for the one player missions, but much more fun than the normal way of doing things.
