When it comes to the timeless game Mr Driller, there is simply only one word to describe it.
That word is: addictive. What makes this game too addictive is the simplicity of the game itself and also the skill required to play it. It’s a simple game that anybody of any age can play, but also takes practice and pure luck to master it.
Gameplay: The game play is simply a cross between Dig-Dug and Tetris. You are on a vertical drop and you dig further downwards destroying blocks on the way.
The thought itself is simple, however you must avoid other falling blocks and make sure you stay alive by collecting air vials so you do not run out of oxygen. The more blocks you destroy the more points you gain. There are basically three modes: 500m, 1000m and Endless.
In 500m you aim to drill your way down to the bottom to meet your destination of a depth of 500m. Once achieved this goal, you are ranked in terms of a point based system. Likewise for 1000m, except this is considerably harder in terms of it is double the distance needed to be drilling and the stages or “waves” of each 100m increments become harder. Endless, is exactly how the title describes it, as the player you dig further
and further and aim to achieve the highest possible points and surviving the longest.
Characters: The characters are a interesting dimension to the game, each character has different attributes which can make the game harder or easier. For example, one such character is able to move much faster, however their air consumption is also faster at a cost. While some characters’ moving speeds are slower but also result in a slower air consumption as a bonus. These characters generally determine the difficultly of the game in another aspect. The first challenge is to make it to the bottom alive, once mastering that it is a game based on skill and pure luck to attain the highest score possible.
Sound: The music involved is very simple, simply because this game is very simple in itself. The tune is pleasant to hear and not too repetitive, it has a joyful tone and keeps you in the mood to play and allows yourself to actually enjoy yourself. It doubly acts to calm the player down in times of frustration since the tune itself is so happy!
Graphics: The graphics are very colourful and pleasing to view, it is based in a dark setting with bright coloured blocks which contrast the darkness and gives a vibrant yet darkish feel to the game, while always remaining happy. This game truly is for all ages and is very appropriate for young and old. It is quite simply 2D and has very similar colour features such that of Tetris and Puzzle Bobble.
