The Adventures of Robbo is a game where you, Robbo the robot, have to collect bolts and get to the exit. This of course is not as easy as it sounds. It is, after all, a puzzle game. You have to find keys to open locks, get bolts, move though the laser beams at the right time, position objects in the right place and move explosives to a useful place so that you can create a path when you detonate them.
When you first try The Adventures of Robbo, you will notice that it looks similar to the game, Boulder Dash.
You have to collect commodities and then, while maneuvering blocks to form a path and avoiding enemies which move in specific patterns, get to the exit. You also have a limited number of lives. However in The Adventures of Robbo there is no gravity pulling boulders down to crush you or your enemies.
The flying things that look like arrows are enemies which will destroy you if they fly adjacent to you. I found this to be frustrating at times because it was difficult to judge where to safely stand. There are also things that shoot bullets, some in random directions and some in only one direction. Shooting a bomb will cause it will blow up and if you stand too close, you will get caught in
the explosion and suffer the consequences. Thankfully there are things you can do to overcome these challenges. Robbo can shoot the flying enemies and destroy them. But to shoot, you need battery power which you can pick up. Note however that this battery power is limited, so use it sparingly. You can also use everything to your advantage including turrets and bombs. Bombs may be used to destroy the moveable blocks if necessary. Turrets can be used to brake through some walls. Plan your moves. Remember your mind is the greatest asset you have.
There is no distracting music in the game itself although there is music on the title screen. Even though this game is old, there is the odd word spoken. You will hear the name of the item you have just picked up, commiserations on Robbo's untimely demise, congratulations on a successful level and if you don't do anything for a while he will remind you of his presence.
In conclusion, this game is challenging but entertaining. I would recommend it to people who like Boulder Dash. However it can get annoying at times because you have to start at the beginning of the level every time you die and bullets and laser beams are randomly shot instead of in a predictable pattern. This game does not appear to have a story to it but if you are a puzzle addict this probably won't worry you. Go ahead, your bolts await you.
