Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

PC
Genre:  Role-Playing    |     Year: 1996    |     Publisher: Activision     |     Developer: Silicon Knights
Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/04/2007
Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain is the first in a series of installments inspired by the great and bloody vampire Kain and developed by Crystal Dynamics. This is the original that spawned a brilliant series of 3D action combat games. Blood Omen is a top-down action game.
Kain can most accurately be described as a main character, since he is neither hero nor antihero. He is one of the few gaming protagonists, like the disembodied hand in Dungeon Keeper that is simply evil.
Kain is a wealthy lord in the fictional land of Nosgoth who is murdered. When the necromancer Mortanius offers him the chance for revenge by embracing the life of a vampire, Kain accepts. With his newly found powers, Kain easily avenges his assassination, only to learn that Mortanius believes the masterminds behind Kain’s death reside within the Pillars of Nosgoth. Kain’s quest becomes to find and destroy the guardians of the Pillars.
Along the way, he meets many non-playing characters and kills a great many peasants, without conscience. After dispatching several of the guardians, Kain attempts to neutralize a bigger threat by changing the course of history, but unwittingly launches a wretched crusade to eliminate all vampires, which leaves him the last vampire in the realm. He is then faced with the remaining guardians, one of whom is none other than Mortanius. Upon the death of all the known guardians, Kain learns that he himself is the final guardian of the Pillars, which hold the balance of the land within them. Kain can destroy himself and doom vampires to extinction, but save the land OR live on in his undead state and let the Pillars crumble before him.
The one main difference is that Kain’s health is replenished and experience points are gleaned by drinking the blood of those he kills. The story is excellent, the game play is mostly smooth, the graphics are colorful and the sound is good. Despite being the forerunner of the series, it is arguably the best of the five and will provide a great gaming experience for any users without a faint heart.

In my opinion, the best game of the series. Blood Omen: LoK has a very deep storyline combined with amazing voice talent. There is nothing more i can say that the other reviews didn't already talk about. Download and enjoy.
