Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 01/07/2008
In the very early nineties, Mindscape released the computer role playing game Captive for the PC. It is a single player game that was ported to many different formats and features a science fiction theme. It is basically a Dungeon Master clone. It boasted three-dimensional graphics from the first person perspective.
The premise behind Captive sees Trill, the main character, sentenced to two hundred and fifty years in a cryogenic prison for crimes he did not commit. He awakens two hundred and forty eight years later with no recollection of who he is. He has been in stasis for so long, that he has been forgotten about, and the room he was stored in also houses other items. He obtains a computer and manages to gain control of four droids. He must use those droids to locate his prison and break himself out.
These four droids become the player’s characters. The droids must visit bases on planets around the galaxy. Upon exploring each base, the droids learn the location of other bases that can be explored, as well. These locations are discerned by collecting space probes. The droids must also blow up the generator on each base, all of which combine to power the shields that contain the prison station where Trill is located. On each base, the game play consists of navigating the four droids, helping them to locate the base’s entrance, exploring vast dungeons and caverns in an effort to find the probes, blowing up the generators, and finding their way back to the ship before the place explodes. There are many enemies within each base, and some puzzles for the user to solve. When the droids finally work their way through all nine bases and finally the space station where Trill is housed, the user is given an option. The droids can either free Trill and end the game, or allow the enemy to recapture him and start a new mission.
Typical of an RPG, Captive features shops where the droids can purchase and sell weapons and repair themselves. The droids all have body parts that can be upgraded or replaced. Weapons are primarily different types of guns that fire unique shots. Droids have a finite amount of space and can carry a predefined amount of weight without collapse. These attributes increase as the droids upgrade themselves on their quests.
In short, Captive is an interesting science fiction role playing game. The party consists of droids following a linear plot line with interesting themes. It is a nice game and will provide hours of satisfying play. Recommended for download.
