Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 01/03/2008
Synergistic Software, Incorporated programmed Conan the Cimmerian in the early nineties and it was published by Virgin Games Interactive. It is a side scrolling action adventure with elements of a role playing game. The main view is top down when wandering the main map, but it will switch to the side scroller during duels or when inside a building or cavern.
Conan the Cimmerian is based on the character of Conan the Barbarian, the hero of many books and comic books by Robert E. Howard. Many reprints and rehashes of the original tales made Conan more and more popular long after Howard’s death from suicide.
Through all of Conan’s tales, Conan has one goal and one goal only…he wants to meet his maker Crom and hold the answers to Crom’s many questions, particularly the riddle of the steel. If Conan passes these tests, he will be invited to sit beside his lord on the great throne, and this is his greatest desire. The tale of this particular game sees the user leading Conan in a quest of vengeance against Thoth-Amon, one of the evil priests of Set who destroyed Conan’s childhood village and took him captive as a youngster. The game skips much of Conan’s back story, and strays significantly from the timeline, but begins with Conan at the gates of Shadizar, bent on removing Thoth-Amon from power.
In his quest, Conan will have to find allies, and fight many duels in order to become a stronger, more worthy warrior. He will have to complete quests and tasks in order to build his reputation as a warrior and gain experience. Conan can also train in order to gain experience, but this is costly. Gold can be procured through fighting, completing quests, and even looting private homes. Money can also be used to purchase better weapons, armor and items to aid the barbarian in ensuing quests. One such item is the key, which can be used on chests that Conan finds, locked houses, and other, more important locations. He does not, however, have unlimited space in his inventory, so gamers must be sure to budget their space accordingly.
In summary, Conan the Cimmerian is a nice role playing game and action combination game. It contains elements of both, which should offer an appeal to several types of PC gamers. It has a lot of room to explore, making it worthwhile because of its length, and it is also highly replayable, despite the linear plot. In short, it comes highly recommended for download.
