Game Review (written by Apeman81) Added on: 08/13/2007
The first time I played this game I was just a young lad. I was hooked on all the gold box games, and when I was a kid, this one was my favourite. I recent started playing this one again and I discovered it’s even better when you’re older. Its has it all, cool graphics, a good story, nice twist, straight forward goal and even a way in game to point you in the right direction. It is great for AD&D novice because it starts you off at levels 1 or 2.
I really love the different monster pics in this game. It is also rather challenging, even with a variable difficulty setting. Also managing the vaults and character inventories will appeal to micro managers. The downsides are that it’s a fairly short game, quick to beat, and it is very much lacking in sub-plots and side quests.
My favourite things have to be, in addition to the pic mentioned about, is the icon custumiblity and that it allows you to modify stats right after character creation, so you can had a randomly rolled group, a super group or even import your favourite AD&D character in, at least name and stat wise. However, this is standard fair for the gold box games. One good thing about this game is that you actually get to meet the chick on the cover art in the game, though I can't give away the specifics. This is also a fantastic game because it takes place in one of the most popular places in the forgotten realms setting and pit you again the Nazi esurient bad boys of the setting, the Zhents. With the ability to frequently save the learn curve is very generous. Another really cool thing is the shear variety of weapons and armour you have to choose from, even at the very beginning of the game.
You can out fit your characters, especially the fighter types anyway you can think of. Want a pike unit, you can have it. Archer each with a different bow, you got it. Another plus with this and other gold box games is the shear number of party configurations you can have along with the larger number class race and alignment combinations, thought not as much as is some of the other gold box games. My favourite party make up is a human paladin, a half-elf ranger-cleric, half-elf cleric-mage, Human Cleric and Human Mage.
It’s a great game, which develops your different skills and memory. I highly recommend it to all ages! It’s worth downloading!
