The Legend of Faerghail is a role playing and adventure hybrid game that was created to play entirely from the first person perspective. It was developed by reline Software and was published by Electronic Design Hannover. It was released for play on the home computer in the very early nineties and was also ported to the Amiga and Atari ST. It features the medieval or fantasy theme that was very popular in role playing games of this era.
The Legend of Faerghail is filled with magic and myth…enough to entice any gamer.
It features a user interface that is quite easy to master and is reminiscent of more mainstream games, such as the Bard’s Tale series or the Dragon Wars. While the interface is easy to learn, the game itself is very complex, beginning with the fact that the gaming environment is bigger than enormous. There are eight very large dungeons to negotiate and each one has over one thousand different rooms, so there is definitely a lot of ground to cover in this one. To make the game even deeper and more intricate, there are over eighty unique enemies to face, each with their own looks, fighting styles, and weaknesses. These are some of the reasons that the Legend of Faerghail might be better
served for gamers with some experience with dungeon crawls and role playing games, in general.
The storyline of the Legend of Faerghail involves a sinister crusade launched to slaughter the elvish race. You will formulate a party of six total characters and will launch a counterattack to intervene in this crusade. The elves have been corrupted by some inexplicable and unfathomable evil, but they are not deserving of this fate. The game plays out like a very stereotypical role playing game with multiple fetch, find and kill quests to partake in. With multiple battles, the gamer’s characters will gain levels and they will be awarded more skill points and hit points, as well. Magic users will learn new spells, some of them being quite original. The game also is filled with surprise “Easter Eggs,” which always make working over a game a little bit more fun and exciting. The music and sound effects were also very good for its day, completing the effectiveness of the package.
The Legend of Faerghail is not a role playing game for the faint of heart, simply because of its size and complexity. Being so similar to the Bard’s Tale series, gamers should have an idea of what they are downloading. This is an old classic, but still a very good play and it should present an excellent challenge for even more seasoned role playing gamers.
