Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 11/22/2007
The famous Magic Candle has begun to melt and there is a threat that the demon within it, Dreax, will escape if someone does not stop it. That someone is you, Lukas, and your band of five other adventurers who must journey across the land of Deruvia and make sure that his incarceration is secure. The game starts with Lukas and more adventurers join the quest as the march across Deruvia builds. Along the way to the magic candle are several towns, castles and markets where Lukas can stop and recruit more heroes. To choose from, he has elves, humans, dwarves, Halflings and wizards. He must wisely choose his band of heroes and trek across Deruvia for the sake of the entire land.
Developed in 1989 by Mind craft, The Magic Candle is a classic role playing game style of adventure. It has many of the classic features come to be expected in role playing games, including the character choices. There are also numerous maps to be explored ranging from towns to dungeons, and the ability to interact with non playing characters. The actual adventuring characters learn new skills through training and practice, and the group can be divided, which makes for a neat distraction. While part of your party eats or rests, another portion can be battling monsters or exploring. There are many items to interact with, and tools, weapons and armor to buy or acquire. There are many magical items around the maps.
The maps themselves are nicely drawn tile-based art. The perspective is primarily overhead with some side views involved. The graphics themselves are great, but like all early games, the graphics pale in comparison to modern day flash and color. Still, in many games such as RPGs and simulations, the game play itself is of more consequence than the game’s color and graphics. The Magic Candle’s lack of stellar graphics won’t draw away from its playability. It also is somewhat customizable. The game’s difficulty can be changed by altering the number of days you have to reach the magic candle before Dreax is released.
Overall, this is a great play and will offer the gamer a great feel for a classic RPG and will also offer several hours of fun. The time limit involved will add a sense of urgency to the situation, and it may force the gamer to start over a time or two in order to reach the magic candle in time to save Deruvia. I highly recommend this game! I’m sure you’ll have fun!
