Game Review (written by Williekj2001) Added on: 12/28/2006
I found this game to be graphically entertaining, but definitely a little slow on the run speed and processing time, but if you are the kind of person who really liked the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy by Peter Jackson that came out several years ago, or if you are a really big fan of the infamous J.R.R. Tolkien written book series then you might really enjoying having a go at downloading and playing this PC version based on that storyline.
The plot outline follows the books by J. R.R. Tolkien more closely than it does the movie series created by Peter Jackson. Because it is a DOS game it is significantly slower than some of the other versions of games that have been based upon the The Lord of the Rings storyline, but it still has its own unique style and flavour, different from the large, mass-produced PS2 and Xbox versions. As for instance, concerning the differences between the popular movie version (what most of the modern generation of gamers and Lord of the Rings enthusiast are familiar with) and the actual Tolkien novels themselves, is that there is present in this game the introduction of the character of Tom Bombadil. This gentleman is completely left of the Peter Jackson movie series, but is very present in the Tolkien novels. By including Tom Bombadil in this version of this classic tale, the game developer has shown awareness not present in the big-budget versions of this storyline available on the market today.
Without the stop at Tom Bombadil's house, "Merry" the Hobbit would have never acquired the dagger with which he uses to stab the Witch-King Angmar in the leg at the battle of Pelenor Fields. This is a crucial plot point that was left out of the Peter Jackson version, due to the fact that it was not convenient to a movie setting, but it is included here and makes for more enjoyable game play as well as a more well rounded and informative game experience.
The best part about this game is its graphics which are refined and colourful, creating a montage of viewing while negotiating the pitfalls and triumphs of the Middle-Earth world. If you like fantasy adventure games and are a big fan of the Lord of the Rings storyline then I would definitely recommend this game for an enjoyable gaming experience well worth the time.
