Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 07/01/2008
Mines of Titan is an adventure game that does an excellent job of offering a new futuristic idea in a classic game. Mines of Titan is based on the Mars Saga, and was reworked for play on the personal computer by Infocom. The original idea was developed by Westwood Associates for Electronic Arts, Incorporated, and was intended for the Commodore 64, although it was ported to numerous other formats. The two games, Mines of Titan and the Mars Saga, are very similar. The only two major differences involve the change in venues and therefore landscaping, and the storylines. While the storylines are very similar, also, Mines of Titan seems to feature a more in depth tale.
The gamer plays Tom Jetland in this role playing adventure game. More characters are available for hire as the game progresses, but Tom is the initial play. The game takes place in the twenty-second century and the characters reside on Primus, a moon based colony. While on Primus, the user basically leads a team of investigators who are trying to learn why communications to the city of Proscenium has been cut off. The characters randomly navigate the map looking for clues to this mystery. Coinciding with the alienation from the city are some odd occurrences in the local mines. Jetland believes that these two events are related and it is to the mines that he leads his party. Aside from the mines, there are numerous other locations to visit, including clubs and shops where items and information can both be obtained.
Of course, anything Jetland wants costs money, and it does not grow on trees…not that Titan offers any. He and his hired band will have to accept some interesting and dangerous missions in order to gain cash. The money gained by completing these missions can be used to upgrade weaponry and purchase other necessary items. While gathering money, the user will also boost his characters’ experience levels and make them more powerful. There are a number of combat sequences that the user can practice to become more powerful as well. There are tons of power ups and fun things to find and buy that will also improve play as well as the characters in general.
Overall, Mines of Titan is a pretty good little game with a very nice space theme and some spooky quests. The game offers a lot to do and a lot of challenges, making it a long lasting and fun play. It should keep most users entertained for quite some time, and those who enjoy role playing games, mysteries or space quests will become engrossed in the tale. Give it a try.

(10/23/2006) An update of Commodore 64 classic Mars Saga, this is a nice sci-fi RPG set on the moon Titan. Control up to 6 characters from various futuristic backgrounds to investigate strange happenings in the mines. Interesting skills and plot make up for the boring and repetitive combats. |
