The original Neverwinter Nights is quite the classic game. I remember playing it in my friend’s basement for hours back when I was 8. Playing it again now, it’s a little hard to get used to. As a modern gamer, I’m much more used to the new BioWare version. You can use your mouse, click on things, see everything all at once and things look more realistic. Combat is quicker and more realistic and everything. Of course, you can’t expect so much from a classic game and you have to assess it for what it is.
It took me a while to understand how to start up the dos emulator and actually get the program to run, but that’s just because I’m not nerdy enough. Once in, it’s fairly self-explanatory. Just like playing any form of D&D, you can choose how to create your character. Once in the game, it took me a little while to get used to the controls. In such a basic world, it’s kind of hard to orient yourself. One thing I didn’t like was that when you hear people talking about things. You can’t talk to them and ask them questions like in newer versions of the game. But again, I’m spoiled by modern technology.
Buying and selling
items is hard to get used to. You have to keep going back to the main screen to see how much money you have, and I still haven’t gotten the hang of how much copper, gold, and platinum are worth and how you spend them. Other than that, it’s easy to figure out. Combat is kind of difficult in the beginning. You don’t start out with that many hit points, and it takes DAYS of sleeping to get them back. Here’s something I just realized. You can’t just rest; you have to take a mini coma before you can get out to battling monsters again. You definitely have to have prior knowledge of how the game works to understand it and get anywhere.
For what it is, however, it’s definitely qualified. The more I play, the more I understand it and it gets more enjoyable. This is definitely one of the better classic games. It obviously had a huge influence on all the MMRPG games that are out now. One thing that may have made it more enjoyable is if it were a multiplayer game, but arranging a server for something like that would be entirely too difficult. This game serves its purpose, it distracts me from writing papers and doing all the other school work that required of me as a college freshman.
