Game Review (written by Darkivy29) Added on: 08/31/2006
Well to start I was just a kid when I first played this old gem this baby was the best of its kind for its time and paved the way for many others an open based top view action game, way ahead of its time that had a bit of a zelda feel to it, but let you make the choice on how you play like the ever ready hacker called a decker the cool magic using shaman or combat ready samurai with many choices and ways to play.
It impressed me and was the by far the best game of its time with one hell of a deep story that keeps you play till the end. And now to give you an idea of what the game play is like this game is all about the choices like do you go full cyborg or make deals and contacts with the yakuza for a massive magic power up, do you pay off the local gangs so they don’t shoot at you as much or do you find the crime mall for the best hacker decks and strongest guns, do you go solo or hire from a pool of shadowrunners just waiting for the big score. And that’s what makes the game great it’s all up to you as you are the shadowrunner one of best at what you do from running the matrix a cyberworld for info or disabling the alarms so can you sneak thru a megacorp this game has it all with a user interface for upgrading your shadowrunner based on you actions called karma and tons of random events to keep you on your toes. And the huge city of Seattle to explore and the native American woodlands all set in the future where magic has returned to the world and the old races have become real like elves, dwarfs, trolls, radioactive mutant, gang members and to top it off monsters as well like zombies, vampires, bandersnaches. And there’s even an ancient dragon with all that the action is pretty intense. And the game play stays fresh throughout as long as you use your head like the shadowrunners you work with, as you do more and more runs they will like you more and will charge less for helping or by siding with the mafia, or yakuza will make the other your hated rival and will shoot onsite making contacts for high grade items, or info is a must and some can even erase any criminal records you may have had placed on your runner, or selling black market data files to a fixer for big bucks. It’s all here and more games like this are the rarest of the rare gaming gems that define a true pure game that draws you in and tells a story worth becoming a part of. Now it’s up to you do you find the truth and avenge your brother or save the world from the darkest of all shadows the choice is yours what kind of shadowrunner will you be.

This version of Shadowrun is not only true to the PnP Game, but was, in my opinion is better than the SNES version. Your character is Joshua, a man looking for information about your brothers mysterious death at the hands of unknown assailants, you can choose which character you can be (Decker, Samuari, Shaman) this is different from the SNES version in which you were a bit of everything (which at the time was not possible in Shadowrun without serious side-effects to your character). There are quite a few characters that can join up with you on your adventure, helping you in skills that you may not be so good in, and if you want to go solo that can be done as well. Although some of the Mr.Johnson quests can get real boring real quick, there also not really necessary to the development of the story, however some of the Mr. Johnson's themselves are. In closing, this is a fantastic cyberpunk game that really didn't get the attention it deserved, if your looking for a good sci-fi RPG shooter then look no further .
