Game Review (written by Lopyswine) Added on: 10/21/2006
Ultima Underworld is one of the best games I have ever played.
I’ll never forget the first time I played this game. I arrived at my friend’s house after a long day in 5th grade. He told me that he just got a new computer game that allowed you to “walk into the screen.” Hahahahahaa I had no idea what he was talking about… so we went and fired it up.
It was simply amazing. Neither of us had ever seen a truly 3D game like this. We were blown away by the graphics and gameplay.
This game is simply one of the top 10 games ever made. It is very fun, it was years before its time in its combat and magic. Also maybe the best thing about this game was the way you could equip your character. We had never played a game with such depth. The might and magic games had a lot of equipment, but not nearly the depth and “damage” of the UUW games.
When the game begins you are in a dark tunnel. You don’t have much around you but after a little exploration you realize you are next to some dirt with a sac on it. Inside the sac is a torch and some food. You have to equip the torch and light it. I had never played a game so realistic. The torches actually burn out with time. With a little more exploration you find either a mace or dagger depending on your character class. You then equip the weapon and begin the great adventure of exploring.
When you get into combat the game begins some new music that’ll notify you of an enemy in the area. You then have to actually swing you weapon and hurt the opponent in real time. You have to aim your shots per say. By the time the battle is over you may have damaged your weapon or armor. So what I am saying is that in this game your weapons and armor actually take damage and can be worn out. Just leaps ahead of its time.
By the time the game is over you have to have made tons of use of the different shrines to pray for new skills and abilities and tons of use of the “note taking” abilities on the map. You will need to forge alliances with bands of villains and orcs. Play the groups against each other all while trying to travel deep enough to find the damsel in distress.
Really overall a great game and I am very excited to be able to play it again thanks to this site and dosbox.

Degenerationxxx (11/29/2006) Didn't enjoy it at, sorry.Lord british (03/03/2006) If you enjoy the Underworld series, you should check out "Shadowcaster." It adds a neat twist in which you periodically "morph" into different beings in order to accomplish a task or overcome an enemy. It's quite a unique concept since I haven't seen anything like it since. |
