Game Review (written by Moonwidower) Added on: 01/11/2008
War of the Lance is a game developed by one of the best strategy game creators there ever was, Strategic Simulations Inc., or SSI for short. SSI made a few games based on the Dragonlance books; this one is based around the classic war between good and evil. You play the role of supreme commander; you must recruit armies, rally other races to your cause, and conquer the evil Dark Queen.
It's a classic top view, turn based game that can be played as a two player game. There are two ways to win, first: have the higher point score at the end of the turn limit, or second: capture and hold all the enemy's strongholds as well as the Clerist Tower. As well as the world domination part of the game there is also the heroes’ quests. You send the heroes on quests to find you valuable items to help you in your fight to banish evil.
There are several different types of units, infantry, Calvary, Pegasus, griffins, dwarves, dragons, and wizards, as well as the other less liked races that usually join the Dark Queen's side such as, goblins, hobgoblins, ogres, Minotaur, and the undead. The good dragons come into play on your side after they realize their kidnapped eggs are being turned into draconian and used against you. The hero quests are a nice distraction to the war, it is not necessary to complete the quests to win the game but having the items from the quests will definitely help you out.
You may need to download a copy of the instruction manual to help you out; I managed to find one for free on a site called replacementdocs.com in a PDF format. I remember first playing War of the Lance on the old Commodore 64 and the way it was setup then is you needed the manual to answer the questions at the boot menu or you couldn't play the game. I found it a hard game to start with but after a few restarts I was able to get myself a good foothold in the game but all in all it was a great game. The only advice to anyone that has not played this game before is go on the defensive until your dragons arrive and then switch to the offensive and try to surround an enemy and utterly destroy them before moving onto the next group.

N/a (02/27/2006) One of the first computer games I ever played. I wish they would remake this one, I think it would be a winner. Classic good against evil setup. Mighty armies battle, while a few search for hidden treasures that can turn the tide of the battle. |
