Game Review (written by Meg5p) Added on: 11/25/2007
ZangbandTK is a variant of the Rogue-type game, which means that you should get used to using your imagination to think through the adventure. This is not as bad as it seems, as Zangband is right up there with ADOM or NETHACK as a full, varied and exciting adventure quest. You won't see fancy first-person graphics or a 3-d city to walk through here, just a world full of objects, monsters, weapons, spells, wands, and more for you to work through. And the graphics really aren't that bad. Think Legend of Zelda but with much more possibilities, since this type of game thrives on the vast number of actions possible for the character. The colours are nice, and although things are not really proportional to realistic size, it just means that you must add that much more from your own imagination as you play.
The basic quest is similar to many of this genre of games, which means that you will be travelling though a dungeon, going further and further underground, in search of increasingly powerful weapons, scrolls, armour, spells, rings, boots, helmets, and other strange objects that you might not even be able to figure out. The plot is less important than the thrill of exploration, although there is some big monster to beat way down in the labyrinth.
But what makes Zangband so addictive is the way it keeps building your desire for a more and more powerful character. Want a better wand? Better keep going. Want to find that magical sword? Well, it's not in the same place it was last time you played (since everything always is built anew each time you play), which makes this game more replayable than most. And you can always try a different combination of class and race (elf, human, dwarf, etc.) to make the game even more strikingly different (there are 330 possible combinations, and that doesn't include the 7 different types of magic available to choose from!). And you can't even begin to count the number of different monsters and monster families that you will encounter as you descend.
One warning: in classic Rogue style, your savegame will be erased when you die, which is both a good and a bad thing. For one, it means that you lazy gameplayers of today will have to get used to a real ironman trial: if you want to kill that serpent of chaos, you will need to sit yourself down and patiently (and carefully!) fight through that whole dungeon in one try. Of course, there is always the trick of copying the save file to another folder, but just know that you are cheating when you do that. But death may still come at any moment; no barging forward to grab that potion, identify it, and then reset once you've got it. But never fear. You can always start again, maybe renaming your character in honour of the dead who followed before him (or I guess her). Just remember that every item and dungeon level has changed, so the only thing you will have learned is to be careful! So go ahead and live an adventure that will make you feel like you're really at the beginning of gaming back in the 80's.
