Game Review (written by Michelle) Added on: 02/26/2008
Chuck Yeager's Air Combat is an aircraft simulation video game produced by Electronic Arts in 1991. It was in the forefront of aircraft sim games. Chuck Yeager was a technical consultant for the game. His voice is heard in the game, giving the player encouragement, praises, and advice during missions.
Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat is known for having an action laden game play that centers on dog fights, while keeping it simple yet realistic with a wonderful flight model. The game, unlike many other flight sims of its day, factored in altitude and aircraft characteristics in how they would affect the simulated aircraft’s behavior.

The game, unlike many other flight sims of its day, factored in altitude and aircraft characteristics in how they would affect the simulated aircraft’s behavior. Yeager was adamant about making the game realistic, even insisting that clouds be added. His experience in flying in each plane featured

helps the sim engine accurately depict the uniqueness of each aircraft.
There are three types of fly modes you can play in. Free Flight lets you fly in an airplane in a non-hostile environment. Create a Mission lets you choose a plane to pilot and puts you against AI-controlled aircraft. The Historical Flight mode lets you choose one of three wars to fly in: World War II, Korean, and Vietnam. The over 50 historical missions are based upon actual missions.
Several help features are available to beginners, such as having unlimited ammunition or making aiming easier. There is a replay feature that lets you change the camera’s angle so you can view the fight from a different perspective, even allowing you to see how the enemy took you down.
If you are a fan of the aircraft sims, Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat definitely needs to be in your collection. With it being one of the leaders in the genre, one should download it just to get the feel for how the flight sims got started.
